Festival Fab!
Summer simply wouldn't be .............well SUMMER if it weren't for the music festival........planning months ahead.....working jobs to afford tickets and then finally purchasing several ......Summer's Sorted....Excitement begins as time draws closer.
Music, being the big attraction and freedom from mundane everyday life , if just, for a little while. Open air headiness highs and lows , most of the time well anything goes.........OR MAYBE NOT!!!!!!!!!
The term "Festival" first appeared on the radar scale in the middle of the 16th century!!! Throughout history music has played an important role at these mass cultural events. Music festivals as we know them today date back to the 1950's. The Newport Jazz festival was founded in 1952 in Rhode Island and 13,000 people attended. Jazz ,Gospel and Blues were performed by artists of the day such as Billie Holliday (one of my all time favourites) , Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillispie. In 1959 a "sister" festival was formed called the Newport Folk Festival and was the launching pad for Mr Bob Dylan. See Here
1967 saw the Music Festival as we know it today called the Montery Pop Festival in California. This festival kick-started the careers of Janis Joplin, The Who and Ravi Shankar into the spotlight. It was also famously where Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire which was one of the most iconic moments in Rock Music Festival history. See Here
Two years later 1969 and Woodstock was born in Bethal Woods New York. 400,000 people came for three days of Love, Peace and great music. The "Music Festival" was firmly launched and rooted in the minds and souls of all the creative and hippiefied beautiful people that attended that famous festival. Stories and tales which would be retold to children and grandchildren in years to come were made on those famous 3 days. ( JEALOUS NOT!!!!) See Here
1970 saw the first Galastonbury which was held the day after Jimi Hendrix died. It was held over a period of two days and was formed by a guy called Michael Eavis. The acts that were included on that faithful two days were Marc Bolan , Al Stewart , Keith Christmas and Stackridge . 1500 people attended and it cost Β£1 entry fee!!!!!! and that included free milk from the nearby farm!!! Ha Ha Ha!!!! Oh the charm and simpliciticy of it all . See Here This festival has gone from strength to strength over the years and is stronger today than ever before. 175,000 people attended Glastonbury this year and it cost Β£228 pounds sterling per ticket. However its one of the most popular and successful festivals in the world.
Many of todays festivals were launched in the 1990's. Big Day Out in Australia , Fuji Festival in Japan , and Coachella in California .
Ireland is no exception when it comes to the popularity of the Music/Rock Festival. Longitude and Forbidden Fruit in Dublin , Body and Soul in Co Meath , and the up-coming Electric Picnic in Stradbally Co Laois all hold their own when it comes to music talent and the all important fashion stakes.......
